James Valentine: Veteran Australian Talkback Radio Host Dies at 64
The veteran radio host and musician chose voluntary assisted dying after a two-year cancer battle, ABC said.
- James Valentine, the 64-year-old ABC Sydney radio host, died at home following a two-year battle with oesophageal cancer.
- Before his 30-year career at the ABC, Valentine was a musician in the band Models, featuring on their 1985 hit 'Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight.' He hosted 702 ABC Radio Sydney's Afternoons program for over 20 years.
- Friend and colleague Richard Glover said Valentine "lifted the mood of a city" through his daily radio efforts for 25 years. ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks described him as "more than a presenter," bringing "warmth, wit, and humanity" to radio.
- Valentine retired in February to focus on his health; his family said he "made the choice to do Voluntary Assisted Dying" and "passed peacefully at home surrounded by his family, who adored him."
- Survived by his wife Joanne and children Ruby and Roy, Valentine is remembered across NSW as a trusted companion who shaped generations of listeners' daily lives.
