Assault Charges Against Sault Ste. Marie MPP Chris Scott Dropped
Prosecutors said Scott finished anger-management counselling and had no prior record, while a related assault charge against his wife was also dropped.
On Wednesday, Ontario prosecutors withdrew assault charges against Sault Ste. Marie MPP Chris Scott. Prosecutor Katherine Rogozinski told Ontario Court Justice Martin Lambert that Scott completed anger management counseling.
Police charged Scott with spousal assault and assault with a weapon in Sept 2025, stemming from an alleged incident involving a high chair. The Progressive Conservative caucus immediately removed him.
Prosecutors also withdrew assault charges against Coline, Scott's wife, who was charged in February 2026 following a separate incident. Defence lawyer Michael Lacy confirmed Scott never intended to plead guilty.
Premier Doug Ford's office confirmed Scott will not return to the Progressive Conservative caucus despite the charge withdrawal. He continues serving as an independent member in provincial parliament.
The Ontario NDP and Ontario Federation of Labour previously urged constituents to demand Scott's resignation. Scott told CBC News his relationships at Queen's Park remain "the same," describing his independent status as "business as usual.
