Romania ended the first eight months of 2026 with a budget deficit of 59.42 billion lei, with almost 27 billion lei lower than in the similar period last year. The Ministry of Finance data shows that revenues have increased at a faster rate than expenditures, but costs with interest and budget pressures remain important. The general consolidated budget deficit reached 59.42 billion lei in the period January-August 2026, 26.94 billion lei less than in the same period last year, according to data transmitted by the Ministry of Finance. As a share of GDP, the deficit dropped from 4.51% to 2.89%. Minister Alexandru Nazare warns, however, that a prudent approach to public spending is necessary.
