Bread price-fixing settlement scammers are trying to get your dough
Scammers are using fake Verita sites and texts to seek personal and credit-card details from claimants awaiting payouts from the $500 million settlement.
Scammers are sending phishing texts impersonating Verita Class Action Services, the administrator for the Canadian Bread Class Action settlement, to deceptively solicit credit card information from eligible claimants.
Verita has issued security warnings stating, "No text messages will be sent to you," as the legitimate claims process for the settlement officially closed on December 12, 2025.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre has logged nine reports of phishing texts since March 1, with four victims confirming their credit card information was compromised, including Elizabeth Haddock.
Confirming "This is fraud," lawyer Jay Strosberg of Strosberg Wingfield Sasso LLP said the firm is actively working with the RCMP and the CAFC to remove recurring fraudulent websites.
Experts warn that scammers are increasingly weaponizing generative AI to orchestrate highly targeted attacks, explaining the rapid emergence of copycat websites that evade detection despite repeated takedown requests.
