Brazil requests WTO consultations over US tariffs
Brazil says the U.S. measures are unjustified and incompatible with trade rules, as the WTO filing begins a formal dispute process.

- Diplomatic tensions peaked July 25 when Brazil denied visas for two US officials, while President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva denounced the tariffs as election interference.
- Brazil previously used the same dispute-settlement process in 2025, when Washington imposed 50 per cent tariffs following the imprisonment of former president Jair Bolsonaro; this step precedes formal panel review.
- The October election features a race between Lula and right-wing candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, whom Lula alleges encouraged tariff pressure with Trump to gain a ballot advantage.
