Braves Add Depth at Catcher by Acquiring Veteran Austin Wynns From Angels, DFA Chadwick Tromp
Austin Wynns gives Atlanta another veteran catcher as injuries to Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy leave the Braves short-handed behind the plate.
The Atlanta Braves acquired veteran catcher Austin Wynns from the Los Angeles Angels for cash on Thursday, designating Chadwick Tromp for assignment.
Following injuries to catchers Drake Baldwin and Sean Murphy, the Braves bolstered their catching depth; Baldwin landed on the 10-day injured list May 19 with a strained right oblique.
Wynns has compiled a lifetime.231 batting average with 19 homers and 84 RBIs across 292 games, previously playing for the Orioles, Giants, Athletics, Reds, Rockies, and Dodgers.
Murphy, who suffered a fractured left middle finger last month, was moved to the 60-day injured list on Thursday. Wynns now joins Sandy Leon as the team's active catchers.
Manager Walt Weiss said Wednesday that Baldwin is on pace to return in June. The team also selected outfielder DaShawn Keirsey's contract and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.
