Boyfriend caught in Germany after girlfriend found dead in midtown Tucson apartment
Police say the suspect stole the victim’s phone and credit cards and sent texts to her mother before fleeing to Germany.
- On Friday, authorities arrested 20-year-old Varun Batchigari in Germany, charging him with the murder of his 19-year-old girlfriend, Julissa Rubi Salazar, in Tucson, Arizona.
- Responding to a welfare check on Thursday, Tucson Fire Department crews found Salazar dead inside an apartment near Euclid Avenue and Elm Street with "signs of trauma."
- Detectives identified Batchigari as the suspect after he flew out of Tucson International Airport on Thursday, attempting to reach his home country of India before authorities intercepted him.
- Facing charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping, Batchigari is awaiting extradition to Arizona, where he will be booked into the Pima County Adult Detention Complex.
- The Tucson Police Department credited federal and international partners, including the FBI and Munich Police Department, saying their efforts "were instrumental in locating Batchigari" in Germany.
