Former Paramedic Faces Manslaughter Charge in in-Custody Death

BOULDER, COLORADO, JUL 11 – Edward McClure faces manslaughter and forgery charges after sedating and restraining Jesus Lopez Barcenas, whose death involved cardiac arrest and methamphetamine toxicity, officials said.

  • On July 11, 2025, Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty formally charged paramedic Edward McClure with manslaughter related to the 2024 death of Jesus Lopez Barcenas following his detention at the University of Colorado Boulder.
  • The charge comes after Barcenas was arrested on December 27, 2024, following campus police receiving a report of a suspicious and agitated individual exhibiting erratic behavior and attempting to cause damage.
  • During the arrest, Barcenas resisted officers and attempted to grab a firearm before being restrained face down and injected with 5 mg of Droperidol by McClure without consulting officers.
  • McClure’s affidavit quotes include “Just keep him face down, I don’t care,” and “Let's strap the crap out of him,” which the DA’s office said were reckless acts leading to Barcenas’s cardiac arrest and death.
  • McClure was arrested, released on $25,000 bail, and fired by American Medical Response for violating policies, while the DA confirmed police officers acted within the law.
