Both NDP and Conservatives make same SkyTrain election promise for Surrey, B.C.
The rival pledges target vote-rich Surrey as residents await rapid transit after light-rail plans were scrapped in 2018.
On Tuesday, The Canadian Press reported that the New Democrats and The Conservative Party both promised to extend the SkyTrain line to Newton in Surrey, aiming to secure voter support days before the Oct 24 provincial election.
Residents have waited eight years for rapid transit since light rail plans were scrapped in 2018, which The Conservative Party claims left the Newton area at the back of the line for years.
Citing his previous partnership with Surrey's Doug McCallum, NDP Leader David Eby committed to the project, pledging to partner again to deliver the SkyTrain extension to Langley and the Newton spur.
Elections data shows about 440,000 ballots were cast from Friday to Sunday, representing about 12 per cent of all registered voters as campaigns prioritize the King George Boulevard corridor.
Voters have until 8 p.m. Wednesday to participate in early voting at hundreds of locations provincewide, leading up to final voting day on Saturday, Oct 24, when the transit promises face voter scrutiny.
