Bonneville Fire Reaches 200 Acres Near University of Utah
Firefighters said 200 acres burned and no structures were threatened as helicopters dropped water and crews ordered voluntary evacuations and closures.
On Saturday, the Bonneville Fire broke out in the foothills above Salt Lake City, growing to approximately 200 acres as the Salt Lake City Fire Department responded near the University of Utah.
The fire stretches from Red Butte Canyon toward the University of Utah Hospital near the Emma Eccles Jones Medical Research Building, with helicopters dropping water along the Wasatch Mountains.
Chad Jepperson confirmed that no buildings are currently threatened, though there have been some "voluntary evacuations" as a precaution and officials closed several hiking trails in the area.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department urged the public to avoid the area, warning that firefighting helicopters will be forced to land if drones are detected near the active fire zone.
Winds are expected to shift southwest, potentially pushing the fire down and away from the mountains to make it easier to control, though the cause remains unknown as crews work near 1950 East Circle and Hope Drive.
