Bombardier wins $753M contract to replace RCAF’s Challengers
The $753M contract includes production, pilot training, maintenance, and military modifications to support multi-mission roles and bolster Canadian aerospace jobs.
- On Dec. 12, 2025, the Defence Investment Agency awarded Bombardier Inc. six Global 6500 jets to replace the RCAF's CC-144 Challenger fleet, announced at the Global Aircraft Assembly Centre in the Greater Toronto Area.
- By replacing aging CC-144 Challengers, the Government of Canada seeks to modernize the Royal Canadian Air Force and enhance multi-mission roles including aeromedical evacuations and disaster relief.
- Produced at Pearson and finished in Greater Montreal, the jets involve more than 60 Canadian suppliers and include military modifications, training, and maintenance, supporting 3,747 jobs and $518.3 million GDP, PwC said.
- The first delivery is expected by summer 2027 with the first aircraft operational by the end of 2027, and Defence Minister David McGuinty praised the deal for supporting more than 12,000 Bombardier employees.
- Valuations differ, with the order cited at about $400 million U.S. and elsewhere at $753-million, and officials note the buy could influence future fleet consistency and training considerations with Saab and its GlobalEye offer.
