Boeing's conventional X-32A first flew on 18 September 2000 and completed 66 flights, demonstrating aerial refuelling, weapons-bay operations and supersonic performance. The short-takeoff X-32B added another 78 flights and landed vertically. Between them the two aircraft flew 144 times and met every requirement the programme set. Boeing still lost.
