- Smith Veras, a 20-year-old man from Queens, New York, went missing while swimming with friends at Liberty Reservoir on July 3, 2025.
- The disappearance followed Mr. Veras going underwater near an island in the reservoir, a location popular but illegal and unsafe for swimming due to depths up to 70-80 feet.
- A large, coordinated search involving multiple agencies, including Carroll County Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police dive teams, took place on July 4 and 5 along the shoreline and in the water.
- On July 5, after two days of searching, authorities successfully recovered Veras's body from the reservoir and informed his family, who had traveled from Queens and were provided lodging nearby.
