Body Found in Search for Missing Johnstone Man Who Fell Overboard on Arran Ferry
Police Scotland discovered a body on a beach in Largs, North Ayrshire on Sunday, October 25, during the search for missing 82-year-old Jim Wither from Johnstone.
Investigations suggest Wither may have entered the water after boarding a CalMac ferry from Ardrossan to Arran on October 18, 2026, after police previously described him as 'vulnerable'.
While formal identification remains pending, Wither's family has been informed; extensive search efforts involved two helicopters, a coastguard aircraft, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution , and local rescue teams.
Police Scotland confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious, with a spokesperson stating, "The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course."
Coordinated efforts by Caledonian MacBrayne , the crew of the MV Caledonian Isles, and HM Coastguard supported police during the search, which concluded after recovery of the body.
