Board of Peace Envoy Warns UN that Gaza Division Risks Becoming Permanent
The envoy said stalled ceasefire terms and Israel’s control of about 60% of the enclave could leave more than 2 million people in a divided Gaza.
On Thursday, Nickolay Mladenov, the United States-founded Board of Peace's lead envoy, warned the United Nations Security Council that Gaza's division could become permanent, leaving more than 2 million people crowded into less than half the territory.
Implementation of the ceasefire plan has stalled as Hamas refuses to disarm, while Israel maintains troops across around 60% of the 365-square-kilometre enclave, blocking reconstruction and governance progress.
"This is a version of the future that Israelis, Palestinians and the region should all fear and all mobilise to avoid," Mladenov said, describing potential for another generation of Gazans trapped in tents.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem rejected the envoy's remarks, calling them an "attempt to create justifications for the occupation's escalation against the people of the Gaza Strip and for tightening the siege imposed on them."
Urging the UNSC to use "every means at its disposal" to press for disarmament, Mladenov emphasized that implementation cannot advance through Palestinian obligations alone while Israel must also uphold its ceasefire commitments.
The plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip has been stalling for months. Without the disarmament of Hamas, permanent misery threatens, the mediator Nickolay Mladenow warned the UN.
