Blue Origin Takes Aim at SpaceX with Rocket Upgrade Announcement
Blue Origin will phase in the New Glenn 9×4 variant with 15% more first-stage thrust and an 8.7-meter fairing to boost payload capacity beyond 70 metric tons to low Earth orbit.
- On Nov. 20, Blue Origin announced plans to increase New Glenn's thrust and make improvements following last week's NG-2 launch and booster landing in the Atlantic.
- To broaden customer options, Blue Origin will operate New Glenn 7×2 and 9×4 concurrently, prioritizing an expendable upper stage for reliability and competitiveness, following last week's success.
- Engine data show total thrust for the seven BE-4 booster engines rises from 3.9 million lbf to 4.5 million lbf, while the two BE-3U upper-stage engines increase from 320,000 lbf to 400,000 lbf and have demonstrated 211,658 lbf on the test stand.
- The upgrades increase New Glenn's payload capacity to 70 tons, a 25-ton increase, with an 8.7-meter fairing benefiting customers to LEO, the Moon and beyond, Blue Origin said.
- Starting with the NG-3 flight scheduled for early next year, Blue Origin said upgrades will phase in, delivering 15% more first-stage thrust by early 2026 while scaling production with more than 20 second stages.
