Jays Hope Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Will Be Back for Rematch with Marlins
Toronto hopes its first baseman can return after a right elbow hit by pitch left him sore and out of Monday’s loss.
The Toronto Blue Jays hope first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. returns for Tuesday's game against Miami after being hit by a pitch on the right elbow Sunday against Pittsburgh and remaining sore through Monday's 8-2 loss.
After being struck by a pitch Sunday, Guerrero was deemed too sore by manager John Schneider to pinch-hit Monday, leaving Toronto vulnerable in an 8-2 defeat to Miami without their star first baseman.
Reinforcing the lineup, outfielder Nathan Lukes rebounded from a 28-game hamstring absence with a strong 3-for-4 performance Monday, though he was hit by a pitch in the head during his first game back.
Tuesday's pitching matchup features right-hander Braydon Fisher as an opener for the Blue Jays against Miami's Sandy Alcantara , who is 0-2 with a 4.29 ERA in three career starts against Toronto.
Right-Hander Dylan Cease, who led the American League with 92 strikeouts in 62 innings, was sidelined with a mild hamstring strain, prompting Toronto to promote 30-year-old Tanner Andrews from Triple-A Buffalo; Andrews pitched a perfect ninth in his major league debut.
