Blackpool, Ipswich, Milton Keynes among nine finalists for UK City of Culture 2029
Nine shortlisted UK places will each get £60,000 to develop bids, with the winner receiving £10 million to fund a year of cultural events, officials said.
- On Wednesday, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport published a nine-place longlist for UK City of Culture 2029 naming Blackpool, Inverness-Highland, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Swindon and Wrexham.
- The competition aims to use culture as a driver for transformation, investment and community pride, with bids required to show how culture will boost growth, retain talent and celebrate local strengths.
- An independent expert advisory panel chaired by Sir Phil Redmond recommended the longlist, and each longlisted place will receive £60,000 to develop their bid; the three most impressive non‑winners will each get £125,000.
- The winning city will be announced later this year and will receive a confirmed £10 million to deliver a year-long cultural programme succeeding Bradford.
- Bradford's experience shows over 75 per cent of a 5,000-event programme was free, drawing three million people, while Milton Keynes's 2029 year could open a £76 million, 4,000-capacity venue.
