Descendants of Chief Who Inspired 'Washington Redskins' Logo Seek Return of Former Name
The family says the change would honor Chief Two Guns White Calf and could make RFK Stadium the first NFL venue named for a Native American.
Descendants of Chief Two Guns White Calf are campaigning to restore the Washington Redskins name and logo removed in 2020. Alongside attorney Denise Rosado, the estate aims to rename RFK Stadium to honor their grandfather.
While Native American activist groups successfully pushed to remove the "Redskins" name in 2020 deeming it a slur, the chief's descendants argue the mascot brings pride. Historian Brock Conway stated, "They tried to erase us, like we didn't exist anymore."
Morningstar Gopher emphasized the chief's impact on the National Football League for 50 years. "We symbolize him with honor by you know putting his picture on our walls," Brock Conway added.
Seeking political support, Gopher said, "We're hopeful for a meeting with President Trump in order to help get this pushed forward." Trump has previously urged the Washington Commanders and Cleveland Guardians to restore their old names.
Attorney Denise Rosado believes renaming RFK Stadium would be a "win-win" for the family and Native people. The estate remains hopeful for a meeting with the team to discuss restoring the former mascot soon.
