Chile recorded the lowest fertility rate in its history, which has been falling for 25 years and for the first time was below one child per woman.
The birth rate in Chile fell 46.9% in the last 32 years, reported the National Institute of Statistics (INE). It also highlighted that women are postponing maternity for more advanced ages.
There are currently 20.1 million Chileans and it is estimated that if this trend continues in 2070 there will be less than 17 million.
The INE reported that the fertility rate fell to 0.99 children per woman, placing Chile among the lowest rates in the world.
