Billionaire Undergoing UK's Most Expensive House Renovation to Leave Country
Rokos, who paid £330 million in tax last year, is opening an Athens office as Labour’s tax plans spur more wealthy departures.
Hedge fund founder Chris Rokos, Britain's third-largest taxpayer, is moving to Greece amid speculation over potential autumn budget tax increases; he will also open an office in Athens.
Rokos's departure follows exits by steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and Checkout founder Guillaume Pousaz, as Labour's tax shake-up has prompted a growing number of wealthy individuals to leave Britain.
Worth an estimated £2.6 billion, Rokos paid £330 million in tax last year and owns Tottenham House, currently undergoing renovation with total investment expected to exceed £200 million.
Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith called the departure 'bad news,' while East Wiltshire MP Danny Kruger noted the loss of £300 million in annual tax revenue to the Greek government, stating the move is not political.
A government spokesperson countered that 'the UK remains an attractive destination for talent and investment,' citing the chancellor's wealth-creation focus and the country's 'competitive and stable tax system.
The British billionaire Chris Rockus, who runs hedge funds and one of the largest taxpayers, joins a long list of billionaires who moved their residence outside Britain because of taxes.
