UNC Coach Bill Belichick Reportedly Names Billy Edwards Jr. Starting QB
Billy Edwards Jr. won a close battle for the job after UNC averaged 19.3 points per game last season, ESPN reported.
On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the Fayetteville Observer confirmed that graduate student Billy Edwards Jr. is the University of North Carolina's starting quarterback for the season opener against Texas Christian University on August 29 in Dublin, Ireland.
North Carolina's 2025 season was hampered by poor quarterback play, as the team posted a 4-8 record and averaged just 19.3 points per game, ranking 120th among 136 FBS teams.
Edwards brings significant experience to the roster, boasting more than 1,000 career snaps and completing 65.0 percent of his passes for 2,881 yards during his 2024 season at Maryland.
Winning what ESPN's Pete Thamel termed a "close battle" against transfer Miles O'Neill, Edwards will lead an offense under new coordinator Bobby Petrino, hired by head coach Bill Belichick.
Following the Dublin opener, the Tar Heels face a rigorous schedule including East Tennessee State, Clemson, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, and Duke, with no honeymoon period expected for the new staff.
