SC Directive on Bihar SIR Has ‘Discredited and Exposed’ EC, ‘G2 Puppeteers Decisively Defeated’: Congress
Supreme Court mandates online claims with Aadhaar for 85,000 excluded voters and over 200,000 new registrations, aiming to increase inclusivity in Bihar's voter revision.
- On Friday, the Supreme Court of India directed the Election Commission of India to accept online claim forms for Bihar's Special Intensive Revision, relieving those omitted from the draft electoral roll.
- After the first SIR phase revealed mass omissions, about 65 lakh omitted voters prompted the Supreme Court bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi to issue the August 14 order for district-wise deletion lists and reasons.
- The court clarified acceptable ID rules by allowing claim forms with an Aadhaar card number or any one of 11 other acceptable documents and ordered officials to issue acknowledgement receipts to booth-level agents.
- The ECI told the court that around 85,000 excluded voters filed claims and over 2 lakh new registrants emerged under the SIR, and the bench posted the matter for September 8.
- The exercise has touched off political disputes and reduced Bihar's registered electorate from 7.9 crore to 7.24 crore, with the Supreme Court reproaching parties for their earlier inaction.
