Big Ten says USC should have been penalized on fake punt play under the NCAA's Unfair Tactics rule
The Big Ten said USC violated NCAA rules by having two players wear the same jersey number on the field during a fake punt, which should have resulted in a penalty.
- On Nov. 9, the Big Ten Conference said Southern California Trojans football should have been assessed a team unsportsmanlike conduct penalty because third-string quarterback Sam Huard wore the same jersey number as Sam Johnson, the Trojans' regular punter.
- NCAA Rule 9, Section 2, Article 2, Paragraph D states two players at the same position may not share a number, and USC's online and game-day rosters showed conflicting listings for Huard.
- During Friday's game in Los Angeles, Sam Huard lined up in the punter's spot, took the long snap, and completed a 10-yard pass to wide receiver Tanook Hines early in the second quarter.
- The Big Ten said it will continue to review the fake punt with both USC and Northwestern as it examines the numbering issue, and USC scored a tie-breaking touchdown five plays later to win, while Northwestern coach David Braun did not complain.
- Lincoln Riley said, `It was just a well thought out thing by several of our staff members` after USC confirmed a spokesperson changed Huard's number on the game-day roster.
