Bieniemy jokes wife Mia gave him blessing to rejoin Chiefs after she was shot at their Virginia home
Eric Bieniemy said his wife is recovering and gave him permission to rejoin the Chiefs after their son was charged in the shooting.
Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy returned to training camp on Tuesday in St. Joseph, Missouri, after leaving the team to support his wife Mia following a shooting incident at their Virginia home.
Mia was shot the evening of July 26 at their Ashburn, Virginia home; their 27-year-old son, Elijah, was arrested at the scene and charged with malicious wounding and firearm offenses.
Even while away in Ashburn, Virginia, Bieniemy watched practice streams from Missouri Western State University and participated in team meetings remotely, staying connected to coaching decisions and player development.
His wife told him, "You have my blessing to leave," prompting Bieniemy to return; he publicly thanked the Hunt family and the entire Chiefs organization for their support during the ordeal.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes said the team stayed close to Bieniemy throughout his absence, noting that his return brings a familiar competitive energy as the Chiefs continue their development process.
