- In New Delhi, September 06, 2025, Adani Power Ltd. and Druk Green Power Corporation signed the Shareholders Agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project, witnessed by Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Gautam Adani, Adani Group Chairman.
- Historically, Bhutan and India have cooperated since the 1960s to develop hydropower, with the Wangchhu project as the first initiative under a May 2025 Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop 5,000 MW in Bhutan.
- The developers also finalised the Shareholders Agreement, PPA understanding, and Concession Agreement with the Royal Government of Bhutan under a BOOT model, requiring Rs 6,000 crore and starting construction by mid-2026.
- The project will meet Bhutan's peak winter electricity demand when hydropower is low and export surplus power to India in summer, officials say it will enhance Bhutan's energy security and strengthen grid connectivity between Bhutan and India.
- Looking beyond Wangchhu, Druk Green Power Corporation , which operates over 2,500 MW, said Bhutan plans to add 15,000 MW hydropower and 5,000 MW solar capacity by 2040.
