Bezos' Blue Origin to deploy thousands of satellites for new 'TeraWave' communications network

Blue Origin plans a 5,408-satellite network offering up to 6 terabits per second for enterprise and government users, with deployment starting in late 2027.

  • On January 21, Blue Origin announced TeraWave, a new satellite network for data centers, governments and businesses, saying `This network will service tens of thousands of enterprise, data center and government users who require reliable connectivity for critical operations`.
  • Driven by rising AI workloads, Blue Origin said TeraWave meets demand from AI data centers and cloud services, distinct from Jeff Bezos' Amazon Leo authorized for 3,236 satellites.
  • Technically, the network pairs LEO RF capacity with MEO laser links, using 5,280 LEO and 128 MEO TeraWave satellites with RF links up to 144 Gbps and laser links up to 6 Tbps.
  • Following the announcement, market reaction showed AST SpaceMobile and EchoStar shares fell as investors weighed new deep-pocketed competition targeting hard-to-reach connectivity markets.
  • Blue Origin plans to begin deployments in the fourth quarter of 2027, seeking multiple regulatory waivers including FCC processing-relief and leveraging New Glenn launch capability.
