Bestzyme Launches World's First Dedicated, Automated Smart Production Line for Sweet Proteins in Jinan
The line is designed to produce more than 100 tons a year of Mellia Brazzein sweet protein and support sugar reduction without changing taste.
On Monday, Bestzyme, a synthetic biology company under GenScript Biotech, announced completion of the world's first dedicated automated production line for sweet proteins at its Jinan, China facility.
For decades, sweet proteins remained confined to laboratories due to low host expression levels and extreme separation difficulties, but Bestzyme overcame these barriers through rare integrated R&D and production capabilities.
Spanning 5,000 square meters, the facility features a fully automated "fermentation purification freeze-drying" process producing over 100 tons annually of Mellia Brazzein, equivalent to 300,000 tons of sucrose sweetness, with capacity potentially doubling within two years.
Mellia received a No Questions Letter from the U.S. FDA in April 2025 confirming GRAS status and has completed "0 to 1" commercial validation, scaling up through a sparkling water brand partnership delivering "zero sugar" with full-bodied sweetness.
Bestzyme positions itself as first to guarantee supply stability and quality control to beverage manufacturers, with Mellia functioning as the "final piece of the puzzle" by blending synergistically with existing sweeteners like Stevia and Monk fruit in a hundreds-of-billions market.
