Bernardeschi, Corbeanu score twice to lead Toronto FC to 6-1 thrashing of CF Montreal
Toronto FC defeated Canadian rivals Montreal 6-1 in a Major League Soccer match on Saturday.
Montreal, who sit last in the Eastern Conference, were handed a disadvantage early on when Joel Waterman received a direct red card in the 21st minute, with Toronto already leading 1-0.
Federico Bernardeschi, previously of Juventus, netted two goals as part of an impressive team effort that also featured strikes from Tyrese Spicer and a double from substitute Canadian forward Theo Corbeanu.
Toronto head coach Robin Fraser praised the team’s composed and patient approach, highlighting Bernardeschi’s constant threat whenever he had the ball, and pointed out that Montreal faced a challenging scenario after being reduced to ten men early in the match.
Toronto's comprehensive win illustrated their ability to capitalize on a numerical advantage and pressured Montreal further in the Eastern Conference standings.
At the 34th minute, a supporter of the CF Montréal rose from his bench, climbed the stairs of the Saputo Stadium and went to address President Gabriel Gervais, seated above. The Blue White Black lost 3-0 against his rival of the Toronto FC at that time, and was running out of a man since Joel Waterman was expelled at the 21st minute. In other words: it was a calamitous day.
