Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds Recalled over Possible E. Coli, Salmonella Contamination
The recall follows an FDA traceback investigation that linked the seed to a sprout grower and one positive E. coli sample, officials said.
- Berlin Seeds, based in Millersburg, Ohio, is recalling 950 pounds of alfalfa sprouting seed due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli and Salmonella shipped to 42 states between February 13 and August 23, 2026.
- FDA investigation findings prompted the recall after a seed supplier identified the product through traceback and detected E. coli in a spent irrigation water sample from one alfalfa seed lot.
- Packages range from 1/4 pound to 50-pound bags, with lot code SAL2-24JB appearing only on 5-pound and 50-pound containers; smaller 1/4 pound, 1/2 pound, and 1-pound packages bear no lot code.
- One illness has been reported directly to Berlin Seeds, and consumers should immediately stop using the seed, dispose of it in a sealed bag, and sanitize any surfaces or containers that contacted the product.
- The FDA warns that Shiga toxin-producing E. coli can cause severe diarrhea or kidney failure, while Salmonella may result in serious illness; customers can contact Berlin Seeds at 877-464-0892 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time.
