The German was the first leader of the event after the inaugural time trial on Monday.
German cyclist Maximilian Schachmann (Soudal Quick Step) celebrated his first world series victory since 2021. He won the first stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, a 16.5 km time trial around the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Joao Almeida was only half a second behind.
