Ben Affleck Reveals the Real Reason Ex-Wife Jennifer Garner Left His Netflix Thriller
Jennifer Garner was replaced by Kerry Washington after Ben Affleck took the lead role and the film was reworked around a casting change.
Ben Affleck director of the film Animals recast Jennifer Garner actress after determining their shared personal history would create distracting "baggage" for audiences watching them play a married couple.
Initially, Garner was cast as Abigail, the wife of Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball, opposite Matt Damon actor; when Damon exited due to scheduling conflicts, Affleck assumed the lead role himself.
Garner and Affleck, who were married for 13 years and remain "really good friends," discussed the casting; Garner said, "We don't wanna do that. You just get baggage."
Kerry Washington actress replaced Garner as Abigail, starring opposite Affleck in the thriller; the film is set for Netflix release on October 9.
Despite the recasting, Affleck remains "profoundly grateful" to Garner and open to future collaborations; the two previously starred together in Pearl Harbor and Daredevil.
