Belarus' Lukashenko says US admission of failure to overturn re-election could revive relations
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said in an interview that relations with the United States could improve and that a starting point could be U.S. acknowledgment that a Western campaign to overturn his 2020 re-election had failed.
The Belarusian authorities released 123 political prisoners, including Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski and opponent Maria Kolesnikova. The US administration, which negotiated with Minsk, granted in exchange the lifting of sanctions on Belarusian potash. The state media underline the ongoing normalization of relations with Washington, which the press in neighbouring Russia is watching with interest.
