- Colorado Parks and Wildlife notes Colorado has an estimated 3,800 to 4,400 mountain lions, which are more visible in winter following deer and elk, but attacks remain rare with 28 since 1990.
- Around 12:15 p.m., hikers on the Crosier Mountain Trail said they saw a mountain lion near an adult woman lying approximately 100 yards away, threw rocks to drive the lion off, and one hiker who is a physician did not find a pulse.
- Following the discovery, trailheads Crosier Mountain and Houston Heights were closed and Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers, Larimer County Sheriff deputies, Estes Park police and Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department launched an extensive search and euthanized two mountain lions near the scene.
- Investigators say it is unknown if one or multiple animals were involved, and euthanized mountain lions will be tested for human DNA with necropsy checks for rabies and avian influenza under CPW policy.
