Bear with Plastic Jar on Head Freed in Northern Wisconsin
NORTHERN WISCONSIN, AUG 7 – A two-year-old female black bear traveled nearly 50 miles across northern Wisconsin with a plastic jar on its head before officials safely removed it and relocated the bear.
- On Aug. 3, a USDA Wildlife Services professional darted the bear at a private residence, then cut off the jug and checked for injuries.
- On July 26, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources first learned of the bear with a jar on its head in north central Sawyer County after multiple sightings and failed traps as it traveled nearly 50 miles across three counties.
- The 2-year-old female bear weighed about 70 pounds when tranquilized, about 30% to 50% lower than her normal weight, and a public observation indicated she was able to drink by dunking her head in water.
- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources relocated the 70-pound, 2-year-old bear to a wild area with ample food and water, and the DNR reported it was alert and feeding on berries.
- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and USDA Wildlife Services urge residents near bear habitats to secure their garbage, as public reports were key to rescuing a bear with a jar stuck on its head.
