Bear Helps Self to Refrigerator, Entering New Mexico Home Multiple Times
Wildlife officials say the bear broke a trap, returned to the home and was finally captured after repeated refrigerator raids.
On Tuesday, the Department of Wildlife trapped a bear that repeatedly raided a Las Vegas, New Mexico home, breaking through an initial cage and entering the residence multiple times to consume food.
Christian Laumbach, a resident of nine years without prior bear encounters, reported the animal first broke into her home to raid the refrigerator after escaping an initial trap set by wildlife officials.
Describing the encounter, Laumbach said, "So I get up and I pop my head out the door of the bedroom, and there is a bear standing with the middle drawer of my refrigerator open, eating cottage cheese."
The Department of Wildlife successfully removed the bear from the property on Tuesday. Officials advised residents to prevent future visits by bringing garbage inside and securing food sources outside.
She noted that smoke, wildfires, and lack of territory are pushing bears into residential areas, stating, "The takeaway is that we live in their home. They're being pushed by the smoke, by the fires, by lack of territory and food.
