UPDATE: Bear Creek Wildfire Near Harrison Grows to 224 Hectares

NEAR HARRISON HOT SPRINGS, BRITISH COLUMBIA, AUG 3 – The Bear Creek wildfire, one of seven in the Agassiz-Harrison area this year, is human-caused and has prompted evacuation alerts and road closures, officials said.

  • On Sunday, the B.C. Wildfire Service listed the Bear Creek wildfire north of Harrison Hot Springs as out of control after it grew to 200 hectares.
  • In the Agassiz-Harrison area, strong winds on Saturday afternoon fueled most of the fire’s up-slope growth, and four of seven wildfires this year were human-caused.
  • Two bucket helicopters have been bucketing the north flank while 61 firefighters, including two unit crews, fire officers, a medic unit and danger tree fallers, work on the south flank to expand containment.
  • On Saturday, an evacuation alert for the North Cascade Bay Area remains, and roads between the 9-km and 20-km mark of Harrison East Forest Service Road and the Kookipi Forest Service Road are closed.
  • At Harrison Lake, authorities advise boaters and campers to keep a large distance from wildfire response teams and report wildfires at 1-800-663-5555 .
