'Be loud in your dissent' defending First Amendment, journalist says
Halvorson said more than 1,000 student visa revocations and arrests of reporters show a widening crackdown on dissent and press freedom.
Sabrina Halvorson, CEO of North Dakota News Cooperative, warned during a May 20 presentation in Park Rapids that the First Amendment faces unprecedented attacks from government actions systematically silencing dissent and journalists.
President Donald Trump suspended security clearances for law firms representing opponents in 2025 executive orders, while more than 1,000 international students protesting for Palestine had visas revoked and faced detention last year, Halvorson cited.
Trump has posted 5,000 attacks on legitimate press over the past decade, Halvorson noted, while the Department of Defense revoked Pentagon access for news organizations and reporters in Minneapolis faced arrests covering anti-ICE protests.
A 2025 executive order created a task force investigating federal agencies for alleged anti-Christian bias and directed stripping federal funding from MPR and PBS; critics argue this violates the establishment clause by favoring one religion.
Halvorson urged Americans to vote wisely and avoid financially supporting businesses violating constitutional rights, maintaining the government must remain neutral regardless of whether a Democrat or Republican holds office.
