BCWS crews preparing for increased fire behaviour at Similkameen wildfire

EASTGATE AREA, SIMILKAMEEN, BRITISH COLUMBIA, JUL 17 – Crews focus on containment with 95 firefighters and nine helicopters amid expected extreme fire behaviour driven by warm, dry conditions and shifting north winds, BC Wildfire Service said.

  • On Friday , BC Wildfire Service deployed 113 crew and 10 helicopters to battle the 3,071-hectare Placer Creek wildfire in the Eastgate area of the Similkameen Valley.
  • Clear skies and above-seasonal temperatures have set the stage for more vigorous fire, BC Wildfire Service said, and have primed the Placer Creek fire for Rank 5 behaviour driven by north winds.
  • BC Wildfire Service said a night vision-equipped helicopter extended Wednesday’s operations, deployed ground crews to fortify containment lines on key flanks, and the Lower Similkameen Indian Band highlighted a mobilized water-cannon’s immense pumping capacity.
  • On Thursday, provincial crews are bracing for heightened fire activity along the Placer Creek blaze, with BC Wildfire Service saying `we anticipate a visible increase in active flames, candling trees and smoke columns`.
  • Environment Canada forecasts a dip into the mid-20s C by Saturday, while BC Wildfire Service added that over the weekend and into next week winds and temperatures will ease with rising humidity, and crews should still guard against Friday gusts up to 50 km/hr.
