BEXAR COUNTY, TEXAS, JUL 21 – Charles Byrd faces tampering with evidence charges after allegedly killing his wife and living with her decomposing body for over a month, awaiting murder charges pending medical examiner's findings.
- On Sunday, Charles Vandoil Byrd surrendered at a vacant house on the 21000 block of Pleasanton Road after a 24-hour manhunt.
- On June 16, Charles Vandoil Byrd allegedly killed his wife Angela Byrd following a verbal dispute, later admitting he knew he'd eventually be caught but sought to delay arrest.
- Inside the 22000 block of Pleasanton Road, officers detected a strong odor of decomposition, where investigators found Angela Byrd's body wrapped in plastic, and he spent over a month masking the odor with blankets, plastic and cleaning supplies.
- Officials said they will seek murder charges once the medical examiner rules, and Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said that once confirmed, they will pursue those charges.
- He is undergoing a mental health evaluation at the Bexar County Jail, and additional charges including murder are expected after the medical examiner’s ruling.
