Lower Mainland SPCA Workers in British Columbia Vote 97.5% for Strike Action
More than 110 workers seek fair wages, better mental health benefits and workplace changes after nine rounds of talks failed, the union said.
On Monday, June 1, 2026, CUPE 1622 members across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley voted 97.5% in favor of strike action after bargaining with the British Columbia SPCA stalled.
Negotiations stalled after the collective agreement expired in December 2025, with nine rounds of talks failing to resolve issues including fair wages, improved mental health benefits, and staff retention measures.
CUPE 1622 represents more than 110 frontline workers, including animal protection officers. "Animal welfare workers regularly deal with neglected, injured, abused, and abandoned animals," said President Annabelle van Rikxoort.
Following the vote, the Union applied for mediation through the Labour Relations Board to move discussions forward. Strike action remains a "last resort" to restart negotiations, the Union emphasized.
Members seek fair compensation and workplace supports to help ensure experienced staff can continue providing high-quality care. "Our members are proud of the work they do to protect vulnerable animals," said Rikxoort.
