'No Nurse Wants to Be Out Here': BCNU Rallies Outside Kelowna Hospital
The union says it has received more than 5,200 intimidation reports and filed an unfair labour practice application with the BC Labour Board.
- On Monday, BCNU members rallied outside Kelowna General Hospital for the 19th day of job action, as mediation resumes Tuesday. Nurses are demanding respect and a safe workplace.
- BCNU President Adriane Gear cited more than 5,200 reports of intimidation across British Columbia, including 900 from Interior Health since July 2 job action began. The union filed an unfair labour practice application with the Labour Board.
- "No nurse wants to be out here," said Gear, emphasizing members prefer providing patient care. She argued the employer is damaging relationships and stressed the need for a plan to retain staff.
- Last week, the union ended picketing as a "good-faith gesture" ahead of mediation. Mediators adjourned Thursday, July 16, and are scheduled to resume discussions Tuesday, July 21.
- Despite challenges throughout her 33-year nursing career, Gear remains optimistic about resolving the dispute. The BCNU represents 60,000 nurses continuing to demand respect and structural action to end workplace violence.
