Husky dies after being caught in hunting trap west of Radium, B.C.
The trap was legally set on Crown land near Radium Hot Springs, but its proximity to a public road and lack of a release mechanism raise safety concerns.
- On Jan. 8, Sean Boxall's two-year-old Siberian husky Moon triggered a commercial Conibear trap near the 27-kilometre mark of the Horsethief Creek Forest Service Road and died after his trachea was crushed despite CPR attempts.
- Boxall says the trap sat just metres from the plowed road on Crown land adjacent to a plowed mainline recreation road, lacked a release mechanism, and the trapline sign was partly obscured.
- Sean Boxall said, 'Panic mode had set in, and I furiously continued to try to pry the trap apart until my hands were torn and my blood flowed out all over me, Moon, and into the snow,' and he later required 10 stitches after using a chainsaw to free Moon.
- The B.C. Conservation Officer Service said it interviewed the owner and trapper, found the trapper licensed and the placement legal, and will not pursue enforcement, while Sean Boxall and Nicole Trigg launched 'Moon's Law' to ban trapping on public land.
- A freedom-of-information request found at least 56 animals were trapped in B.C. between 2017 and 2021, while the Government of British Columbia has known for over 13 years, and licensed trappers make up less than 0.02 per cent of residents.
