B.C. Greens propose AI data centre moratorium, greater oversight
Emily Lowan says the plan would pause AI data centres until a public-interest audit and new rules are in place.
Party leader Emily Lowan announced The Greens' platform in Victoria, proposing a province-wide moratorium on AI data centres and new safeguards for AI use in schools, workplaces, and online platforms.
This announcement follows public scrutiny of AI companies after reports linked ChatGPT to the February 2026 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, prompting calls for stricter oversight.
The platform includes a moratorium on AI in kindergarten to Grade 12 classrooms, bans on AI-powered worker surveillance, and a prohibition on surveillance pricing by retailers.
Lowan criticized the NDP government for prioritizing AI adoption over regulation, arguing the focus should be "establishing regulations and accountability before harm occurs."
The plan also strengthens the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act with privacy-impact assessments and includes a commitment to work with First Nations to protect data sovereignty.
