B.C. eyes new hydro dam project near Alberta border, minister says

BC Hydro says Site E, Homathko and other options could add firm power as electricity demand is projected to rise 20% by 2030.

  • Energy Minister Adrian Dix announced plans on Monday to "seriously" re-examine the Site E Dam on the Peace River and a hydroelectric project on the Homathko River near Bute Inlet to meet rising electricity demand.
  • Electricity demand in British Columbia is projected to grow about 20 per cent by 2030 and roughly 50 per cent by 2050, requiring firm power to back up intermittent renewable resources like wind and solar.
  • The Site E could provide up to 750 megawatts of capacity, while the Homathko River project could provide roughly 900 megawatts; the adjacent Southgate river system is also being considered for an additional 200 megawatts.
  • Because the Clean Energy Act currently bars building both projects, legislative changes are required to proceed; Dix said technical work will determine whether the two projects can or should proceed.
  • Hydro is exploring other technologies including geothermal and biomass, while the Power Smart program will invest more than $1 billion over three years to expand tools helping customers save energy.
