B.C. Conservatives Criticized for Limiting Media Access in Lead up to Election Day
The party says some candidates will still speak to reporters at an election-night watch party after a string of limited interviews and skipped debates.
As the B.C. election nears, Conservative Party Leader Lorne Doerkson faces criticism for limiting press access, with several candidates also restricting media engagement during the final campaign stretch.
The Conservative Party's sudden reticence follows the removal of two candidates for problematic social media posts and controversy surrounding a third candidate's comments regarding First Nations.
Candidates including Kristina Loewen and Macklin McCall have restricted or excluded reporters from election-night events, while Monica Mohan declined media inquiries and Heather Maahs missed the all-candidates debate.
NDP Leader David Eby criticized Doerkson on Thursday for prioritizing wealthy donors over media, calling him out for restricting reporters to a single question without follow-ups.
Doerkson has no press conference scheduled for Friday, the final full day of campaigning, while the NDP plans to make candidates available to media at election-night gatherings.
