Manitoba NDP Rolls Back on Child-Specific Autism Plan, Will Now Focus on Adults as Well
The government reversed amendments after backlash from families and advocates who said adults with autism should not be left out.
On Friday, Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine announced Manitoba will reverse amendments to Bill 232, ensuring the Autism Strategy Act applies to both children and adults through an "all-encompassing strategy."
Mounting public pressure prompted the reversal after 82 people testified for 15 hours at a legislative committee hearing. Fontaine confirmed her office received approximately 70 emails expressing concern about excluding adults from the legislation.
Winnipeg mom Kidist Kibret welcomed the pivot, noting that hiding autism struggles can have serious health consequences. Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs Grand Chief Kyra Wilson flagged concerns earlier this week about moving away from lifelong support.
Liberal MLA Cindy Lamoureux, who introduced the legislation in March, expressed relief the original bill will pass. She said, "It really shows just how powerful a healthy democracy can be because the public rallied so hard."
Third reading for the bill is expected Tuesday, as the government works to pass the Autism Strategy Act before the third session of the 43rd Legislature ends on Nov. 5.
