B.C. Approves Expansion of Open-Pit Copper Mountain Mine in Southern Interior
The expansion will secure about 800 jobs and increase copper production by up to 90%, supporting local economy and provincial GDP growth.
- On Monday, the Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals issued permits under the Mines Act and Environmental Management Act for the New Ingerbelle expansion at Copper Mountain mine near Princeton, allowing operations beyond 2040.
- Hudbay Minerals said the three-phase expansion will add about 12 years to operations and support about 800 jobs, producing 750,000 tonnes of copper, 25.5 tonnes of gold, 156 tonnes of silver, and $11.5 billion in provincial GDP.
- The New Ingerbelle Extension will expand the pit by 298 hectares in three phases and could raise annual copper production by up to 90 per cent, the province and Hudbay said.
- The permitting review included engagement with First Nations and provincial technical regulators and agencies, and the Upper Similkameen Indian Band and Lower Similkameen Indian Band signed agreements enhancing their role in protecting the Similkameen River.
- B.C.'s status as Canada's largest copper producer informs the sixth approval in 12 months and third this year under B.C.'s Look West plan, with none of its exports going to the U.S.
