B.C. allowed logging in caribou habitat despite its own ministry’s recommendation
The permit covers 815.2 hectares of potential disturbance, and critics say the decision ignores advice to protect fewer than 200 caribou near Quesnel Lake.
The Ministry of Forests approved West Fraser Timber to log in southern caribou habitat, disregarding a recommendation against the plan from the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship.
A July 2025 memo warned logging would negatively impact the herd's ability to be self-sustaining, estimating total disturbances across buffers could reach 815.2 hectares.
Resident Mike James, worried about the under 200 caribou near his Quesnel Lake cabin, called the decision "completely egregious" and demanded permanent logging restrictions.
Lucero Gonzales of the Wilderness Committee alleged the Ministry of Forests acts with "complete impunity" by prioritizing industry over species protection responsibilities.
The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship characterized inter-ministry feedback as "part of the normal course of business," defending its relationship with Forests.
