Child Deaths Mount From Bangladesh Measles Outbreak
Health officials and aid agencies have begun an emergency measles-rubella campaign as 59% vaccine coverage leaves millions of children vulnerable, government data show.
Bangladesh is battling its deadliest measles outbreak in decades, recording 336 child deaths since March 15 and more than 50,000 confirmed or suspected cases, according to government data.
Vaccination coverage dropped to 59 per cent in 2025, falling short of the 95 per cent needed for herd immunity, after the 2024 uprising against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina delayed critical health programs.
Nearly 17 million children have received the vaccine since an emergency campaign launched on April 5, yet measles wards in Dhaka remain crowded with young patients like three-year-old Afia.
To manage patient overflow, the army erected a 20-bed tent field hospital at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, as the country recorded 17 deaths in 24 hours on May 4.
Senior health ministry official Abu Hussain Md Moinul Ahsan warned that restoring herd immunity requires time, noting it would take around a month to see results, while Brigadier-General Asaduzzaman expressed hope infection rates will decrease soon.
